  Thanksgiving question

  thanksgiving day is almost here.

  even sooner you live in canada.

  my question is how do jws refer to it?

  I think problematic is a good word for it. I remember some of the feeble explainations we would give for not celebrating it such as: "we give thanks every day" I guess we could have added: "just not this day because your doing it and we don't want to be like you".

  As for working on the holidays I think the Watchtower wanted you off work so you could go in service? Didn't the Watchtower tout the holidays as good time to go out in service because most people would be home? I think the our clever fiends friends at the tower new they would sell a lot of magazines on those days if they could get convince their brainwashed followers to go out with them. People who might not normally be so nice would take them just to be polite. What they were saying was: I'll take them if you'll just go away and let us enjoy the day."

  Thanksgiving Day is almost here. Even sooner you live in Canada. My question is how do JWs refer to it? Are they allow to call it Thanksgiving? What prompted this question is a conversation I had with my wife's sister who is JW. She said she would be out to see us Thanksgiving weekend. For some reason I didn't think they would refer to it that way although for the life of me I can't think of what else they would call it. I seem to remember tippy toeing around calling Christmas Christmas and Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving.

  those goofy bastards are up to their old tricks again.

  some background: i disassociated a year ago and explained why i was leaving to my mom, who agreed with me and told me that she's been thinking of leaving the dubs for nearly ten years.

  she's been inactive for the past year and happier than ever.

  What! GetBusyLiving got a pot of stew when he left? I might have left earlier if I was an made an offer like that.

  All kidding aside because I left the WT while I was still young in my old age I will be able to afford all the pots of stew I wish. I glad to see GBL left before he wasted his life there.

  And the Lord made an bet with Satan to test Job's loyalty and the Lord, for no apparent reason to Job, smote him on the head and again on the ear and pushed him into a thick sauce so as to make Job sticky and vile and then He slew a tenth part of Job's kine and Job calleth out: "Why doth thou slay my kine?   Good for your mother. It sounds to me like this elderette is bored so she is going to see if she can stir things up a bit. It probably won't be the last you hear on this matter. I hope you mom can make a clean break from the tower. It seems like this is the time for her to do it. She will need your help and support if she does decide to disassociate herself.

  i was raised as a dub, and i suppose when i was quite young i found some of the bible stories interesting.

  however, the older i got the more boring the bible seemed.

  obviously, it had a lot to do with repetition.

  He even mention ed that the society seems to take an awful lot of O.T. for the watchtower studies

  This is common in a lot of cults. The OT is full of rules and rules are what cults like. The NT is more about freedom and individuality. Believe in Jesus and you are saved period. Not a bunch of hoops to jump through. Cults scoff at a simple message like that because it takes them out of the picture. The NT is not a message of control and in order for a cult to survive it needs to be in control of its followers. It is easier for them to find statements that seem to justify their claim that they are the ones you must obey if they rely more on the OT.

  Notice that Paul and Jude identify the stealthy methods often used by apostates. These Bible writers noted that apostates “sneaked in” or “slipped in” with the purpose of morally corrupting those in the Christian congregation. Today, chat rooms offer such corrupt ones the perfect cloak for their devious endeavours. Like rocks hidden below water, these false Christians mark their real intent beneath a pretense of concern for Witness youths. But their goal is to shipwreck the faith of unwary ones.

  The above statement makes more sense and is real scary if you picture Count Floyd from Second City TV reading it.

  Anyone who was raised as a JW could experience Bible burnout even though the Bible is only used by the Watchtower as a series of proof texts to support what they believe. People raised in the Watchtower associate the Bible with five boring meeting per week a the tedious business of wasting their weekend going door to door with Watchtower message instead of doing something normal like playing baseball or going to the beach.

  I find parts of it boring but overall I find it interesting although my interest in reading it seems to ebb and flow. There are a lot more interesting and honest versions than NWT. I have been reading the New Living Bible on my PPC. I also like the New King James and the NIV.

  i learned the truth about the truth after i was df.

  now, i want to get reinstated for family reasons.

  i still want to walk the tightrope to the point of going in service,but cannot promote the teachings of wts as i did for 40 yrs.

  I can understand that some are in a position where they can't get out right a way but I don't understand how someone could even think of going out spreading a belief system they know is false. If you can see the harm it is doing in your life how could you go door to door trying to convice others to put themselves in the same postion you are in?

  As Dan-O said: To thine own self be true. Personally I don't need people in my life (friends or family) that would require me to live a lie in order to befriend me.

  Evenesence said when you go out service you could just talk about God and the Bible. I guess you could do that for a while but eventually they would catch on and nail you for doing that. If you are to be true to yourself at some point you will need to take a stand. The best advise I give you is to prepare yourself eventuality. The cost of leaving can be high but the cost of staying is far worse. If you stay under the conditions you have stated it will distroy you as a person.

  Why the Mainstream Media's reluctance to publish WTS vs Quotes battle?

  we were unable to generate any interest the first go-around with the wts threatening quotes, and now it seems the mainstream media is for the most part ignoring us again.. i have also sent out numerous releases and letters to local media outlets (newspaper, tv, etc.

  ) prior to a number of district conventions, and never got any kind of response nor did i ever see anything anything printed or broadcast except the "fluff" pieces they do about the convention, baptism, drama, blah, blah.

  after reading several local articles, from several different cities, reciting how much $$$$ the conventions bring to each city, i have a feeling that, at least these cases regarding the dc's, the media doesn't want to go after a large contributor to the local economy.. but, what about this case, the lawsuit against quotes?

  The 2 things I am trying to point out in my attempts with the media is:

  1. They say quoting them is causing them embarassment and loss of reputation. Silly.
  2. They say their literature is available only to JWs, not to the general public. Yet they have been carrying on a worldwide multi-billion dollar literature distribution campaign sharing that very literature, even offering it for free.

  IMO if anyone's going to pick up the story, they will probably pay attention to those 2 points, because they are both so absurd. This is absurd Rebel8. This is why it probably belongs on the Jon Stewart show as Zen said. It would probably get some laughs.
